This is an exciting opportunity to help drive forward school improvement by making a significant contribution to effective governance.

The service currently has two vacancies –

  • Clerk to Governors as a day time role, primarily supporting a number of Children and Family Service Boards within the local authority. We anticipate this role to grow to approx. two days per week.
  • Clerk to Governors as an evening role, supporting schools and academies.

The clerk will be accountable to the governing body, working effectively with the chair of governors/trustees, the Headteacher/Principal and other governors/trustees.  As clerk, you will be responsible for the co-ordination and of the distribution of papers, meeting invites and minuting the meetings.  The clerk, fully supported by School Governor Services, will be responsible for advising the governing body about constitutional matters, duties and powers within the current legislative framework.  All clerks will be trained to a nationally accredited level.

Whilst the role requires a commitment of a minimum of ten hours per term, the number of actual hours worked is flexible and open to negotiation - we support multiple schools, academies  and boards across the city (and beyond) and there are plenty of opportunities available to work additional hours - the nature of the work requires flexibility with most (but not all) governing boards meeting in the evening.  The day time clerk role will still have the flexibility to be able to work during the evening supporting schools and academies if the successful candidate choose to do so.

The role of clerk to the governing body will suit someone with excellent organisational skills, who is used to working to deadlines, has good listening, oral and literacy skills and previous experience of accurate minute taking.

For more information about this exciting, and flexible, opportunity to join our team of clerks please contact Jane Fallows, Governor Support Manager on 01782 235891 / 07919 564461.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and we expect all our employees and volunteers to share this commitment.  This position is exempt under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the successful applicant will be subject to a criminal record check from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Please note that if an employee who is currently at risk of redundancy within the organisation applies for this vacancy their application will receive priority.  If this happens you will be advised accordingly.
