Stoke-on-Trent City Council is seeking an innovative and experienced Archive Services Manager to lead the enthusiastic, knowledgeable and talented Stoke-on-Trent City Archives team, following recent relocation to the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery(PMAG). It is an exciting time to join the City Council as we reimagine our museum and archive services and improve the way we celebrate and share Stoke-on-Trent’s rich cultural heritage. A £5m redevelopment is currently underway at The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery, funded by Arts Council England, and 2024 saw the £1.7m move of the City Archives to PMAG, for the first time bringing the City’s heritage collections together on one site.

The City Archives provides public access toa rich collection of archives which document the history and culture of the City, including nationally important industrial archives. The City Archives welcomes visitors from around the world, particularly researchers of ceramics archives such as The Minton Archive – A first glimpse into the records of the Minton factory. Complementing the archive is the comprehensive Local Studies and Pottery Library collection. The City Archives works with an exciting range of external partners and funding bodies to enhance the delivery of its excellent services.

This role provides a fantastic platform to make a real difference in how our local history and culture is preserved, shared, and celebrated by developing the working partnerships with the PMAG teams and Staffordshire Archives and Heritage (Home - Staffordshire History). You will manage the operation of Stoke-on-Trent City Archives within the policy framework established by the Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Joint Archive Committee and the operating procedures of Stoke-on-Trent City Council and you will be a member of the Joint Archive Service Management team. You will join the team a year on from the major relocation project during which game-changing improvements were made to collections care, storage and to online access. The role now offers huge potential for the right candidate to make a mark by further innovation, particularly in public engagement, volunteer programmes and collections development. The forthcoming introduction of new software for cataloguing and digital preservation affords new opportunities to develop digital engagement.

Building on a strong foundation, you will have the opportunity to shape the future of our archives service for the people of Stoke on Trent, its communities and its visitors.
