What is a Personal Assistant?
Personal Assistants (commonly called P.A.s) are directly employed by people who receive health and/or social care funding and need support to enable them to live as independently as possible in their home.
PA.s directly employed by these individuals are entitled to the same employee rights as any other individual, such as being paid an hourly rate and paid holiday entitlement. PA.s are also entitled to statutory sick pay when eligible, maternity/paternity/adoption leave and auto-enrolment (when eligible) into a workplace pension scheme.
What is a typical day?
While there are essential tasks which may be required on a regular basis, one of the advantages of the Personal Assistant role is the breadth of opportunity for the employee to support the individual with a variety of different tasks. These can include:
- Personal care (such as helping to get dressed, personal hygiene, support with eating meals)
- Support with health related tasks
- Support with planning, purchasing and making meals
- Support to access the local community
- Support with leisure and recreational activities
- Cleaning and housework
Working Hours
People have different needs and this affects how much support they require and when they need it.
Hours of employment can vary from a few hours each week to a few hours each day. Hours are usually part-time and flexible so can be fitted around other commitments such as childcare, adult education and your own hobbies arid leisure pursuits.
How do I become a Personal Assistant?
Previous experience as a Personal Assistant is not essential — the right attitude and willingness to learn is just as important. You need to be caring, understanding, patient, reliable and flexible. Training may be available depending on your personal circumstance and this will be discussed at the interview stage.
